Mohamud Mohamed Ali is a quantity surveyor turned two-term Governor of Marsabit, whose path has run from Moyale MP and Assistant Minister to NHIF chairman and a leading voice for Kenya's arid north. Born in Uran, Sololo, in 1973, he moved from Uran Primary School to Starehe Boys' Centre, then took a building economics degree at the University of Nairobi and later a master's in public policy and administration at Kenyatta University. He began as an assistant quantity surveyor in the roads ministry before Moyale voters sent him to Parliament in 2007, where he doubled as Assistant Minister for Special Programmes and sat on the Global Fund board. As NHIF chairman from 2014 he introduced outpatient cover and laid groundwork for universal health coverage. Governor since 2017, he chairs the Council of Governors' transport, infrastructure and energy committee and the Frontier Counties Development Council, pressing for roads, health and inclusion across the frontier counties.
